Maiz & Mezcal

I’ve heard reasonably good things about Maiz and Mezcal, so I was happy to make the journey out east to see what all the fuss was about. The place is located on busy Magill Road and is of a reasonable size. Taking up the floor space of 3 small shops, it could easily accommodate over 70 people.

The decor is somewhat traditional, with good use of timber furnishings and orange colour palette. The dim lighting and the smooth sounds of Latin music playing in the background, really create a warm and cosy atmosphere. The service was better than average, with the staff being attentive and around when you needed them.

This place has a real emphasis on Mexican street food, which translated means this place has a tapas menu and the serving sizes are small. Tonight, I ordered the Tapas Platter which consisted of Volcanoes, Tacos and Quesadillas. The meals came out 10 minutes after ordering, and all the meals pretty much came out at the same time.

POTATO QUESADILLA – Mashed potato inside a soft taco shell. It was OK, but nothing great.

CHICKEN QUESADILLA – Marinated piece of chicken inside a soft taco shell. Again, it was OK. It did it’s job by filling me up a bit.

SOFT TACOS AL PASTOR – This one was interesting. It had the subtle sweetness of the pineapple combined with the heat from the red salsa. The pork was well marinated and all the ingredients really worked well together. It was like Yin and Yang arguing and then settling their differences afterwards. This was probably the best dish out of all of them.

CHARGRILLED SIZZLING STEAK VOLCANOES – While there was a generous amount of meat provided, it was kind of bland and some of it was fatty. The salsa made the corn shell kind of soggy. For the most part, it was OK, but nothing to write home about.

ASSORTED CRISPY TACOS – If you could imagine a soft shell taco rolled up into the shape of a cigar, deep fried and then stuffed with some sort of Latin inspired filling, then this would be it. The tacos were crunchy, they were different, but they just didn’t do it for me. I felt like I was eating corn chips with the absence of any filling.

For Mexican street food, the pricing is on par with what you would pay elsewhere. I was actually surprised that this place was so busy on a weeknight. For those that want to eat here, I advise you to either come early or make a booking. For me, the food wasn’t that great. I’ve had better Mexican street food at other places. Other than that, they do everything else right. It was a tough one tonight. Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars.
