I must admit that I had never heard of Koko Black until I arrived in Melbourne. They’re a bit of an institution in the eastern states and it’s not surprising that they’re slowly opening stores across the country and in New Zealand.
The Collins Street store in Melbourne simply exudes style and elegance with it’s beautiful classic interior. Trying to make the most of my visit, a friend and I decide to order the Dessert Degustation so that we can experience a bit of everything. This consists of the Chocolate Ice Cream, Chocolate Alchemy Cake, Raspberry Chocolate Dome, Belgian Chocolate Mousse and the Opera Gateau.
The Chocolate Ice Cream was rich and decadent, and sat on a bed of crunchy chocolate soil.

The Chocolate Alchemy Cake is decadent chocolate cake layered with Madagascan chocolate creme and crunchy chocolate soil. The chocolate cake was rich but not too sweet, which means you can fit in more desserts.

The Raspberry Chocolate Dome is a milk chocolate and raspberry puree mousse with Madagascan vanilla custard and a liquid raspberry centre. Visually, the standalone version looks more appealing. Subtle notes of raspberry were present but the dessert wasn’t to my liking.

The Belgian Chocolate Mousse was just that. The texture was smooth, delicate and not too sweet.

The Opera Gateau was next which was a roasted coffee infused dark chocolate mousse layered with a hazelnut dacquoise and chewy caramel. This dessert was fantastic and one I would have again and again.

The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. The atmosphere was relaxed and the pricing was average. The Dessert Degustation was $24 but this was for two people. At $12 per person to sample 5 quality desserts, it wasn’t a bad deal at all.
