Twenty Third Street Distillery – Bushfire Recovery Gin

Earlier this year, leading South Australian craft spirit brand, Twenty Third Street Distillery were preparing to launch a Bushfire Recovery Signature Gin. For obvious reasons plans were put on hold, so this has allowed time for the bottle to be launched on the upcoming world Gin day, June 13th, 2020.

The Bushfire Recovery Signature Gin was created to support SAVEM’s (South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management) work on Kangaroo Island from the recent catastrophic bushfires. 100% of sales will be donated to support wildlife recovery and long-term rehabilitation.

Now more than ever, Kangaroo Island needs the support of its surrounding communities and regions. The bushfires wreaked havoc on the island and the Covid-19 lockdown has kept tourists from visiting.

Group Venues Manager Renee Bezzina says, ‘it was devastating to firsthand see the effects on the island and the habitat/wildlife’, we wanted to show our support to the region through releasing the Bush Fire Recovery Signature Gin’.

In true Twenty Third Street style, this isn’t just any standard bottle of gin. The bottle combines brilliant artistry and augmented reality to highlight the true effects the bushfires have had on Kangaroo Island.

‘To highlight the severity of the bush fires and the critical role SAVEM play in the rehabilitation of Kangaroo Island our new release features an Augmented Reality video’ say’s Renee Bezzina. Viewable when scanning the label. Simply download the LabelMotionAR App and watch as you are transported to the Island.

The limited-edition bottle has been designed by Kangaroo Island assemblage artist Janine Mackintosh; her art practice sprang from the study of plants on her bush property on the wild south coast of the island.

“As islanders we share a collective grief and look eagerly for signs of recovery: leaves bursting from Mallee roots, yuccas unfurling fresh green blades and blackened banksia cones pouring seed onto the ash.” says Janine Mackintosh.

Explaining the meaning behind her assemblage, Janine says “the piece is comprised of KI narrow-leaved eucalyptus leaves and the little dots are the flower caps (or operculum). I sometimes see the patterns of my assemblages as aerial landscapes, with the spaces like ‘wallaby tracks’, and the flower caps could be seen as the animals darting through the bush.”
