Today Adelaide Food Central braved the heat and attended the inaugural Kick. Start. Sundays. at the Lion Hotel on Melbourne Street.
The idea behind Kick. Start. Sundays is that once a month, on a Sunday, the Lion Hotel will be spotlighting a local up and coming artist to give them a kick start in their career, coupled with some delicious drink specials, live music and a relaxed Sunday atmosphere. There’s nothing like a Sunday session with a purpose and we were glad to get behind this one.
We had the pleasure of watching Kameo (also known as James Hopgood), a graphic designer and street artist from Fresh Produce, create not only a massive mural, but the bar installation that now adorns the beer garden, all in 40 degree heat. This guy’s commitment to his craft is evident and clearly one of the reasons why the Lion chose to show him their support.
To keep us cool we drank fresh coconuts with Sailor Jerry’s rum, and Strawberry Mojitos, both of which were terribly refreshing.
Being lunchtime, and being Adelaide Food Central, we couldn’t resist indulging in some of the delicious food. We sampled the Murray Valley pork belly with braised tomato & fennel with goat’s curd mash potato. Reminiscent of a stew there was an absence of crispy skin but the flavours were rich and delicious. Perhaps better suited to a cold day with a red wine as it has comfort food written all over it.
Making the wise decision to select something a little lighter we sampled the Tomato and Buffalo Mozarella Bruschetta with radicchio, chicory & raspberry vincotto. The acidity of the raspberry cut perfectly through the richness of chicory but be warned, the bread is piled high so be prepared for things to get messy.
Our stand out dish was the Poached Atlantic Salmon with coconut, sambal belacan, mint, snow peas and baby corn. This cool salad bursting with Asian flavours was perfect on a hot day. The coconut and sambal belacan dressing were reminiscent of the flavours of a laksa, yet more mild.
While the heat may have deterred some people from venturing outside the beer garden slowly but steadily filled up. There was a relaxing atmosphere complemented but the live music wafting from inside. Not too loud as to make talking the person next to you awkward but loud enough to be able to sing along if you knew the song.
It was exactly the kind of Sunday you would want to have on such a sweltering day and for those of you who couldn’t make it, Kameo’s work will be on display for the whole month so you have no excuse not to go see it.
The Lion Hotel is located on Melbourne Street in North Adelaide and Kick. Start. Sundays are on the first Sunday of every month. See you there.
